Nigeria has condemned Wednesday’s military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional seizure of power that threatens democratic stability in West Africa.

In a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Government expressed “profound dismay and deep concern” over the development. Nigeria urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, engage in peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people as expressed through the ballot.

According to the statement, the coup undermines Guinea-Bissau’s democratic progress and violates the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which rejects any transition to power outside constitutional processes.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria, in the strongest possible terms, condemns this act of military insurrection which undermines the democratic progress and stability not only of Guinea-Bissau but of the entire West African sub-region,” the statement read.

Nigeria called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order, as well as the safety of all detained officials and the protection of democratic institutions.

The government also urged the coup leaders to guarantee the safety of election observers still in the country and to allow the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process with the official announcement of results by the electoral body.

“We warn that those behind this act will be held accountable for their actions, which threaten to plunge the nation into chaos and reverse the hard-won gains of its democracy,” the statement added.

As a leading member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to work with regional and international partners to ensure the swift restoration of normalcy and constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and stability across the African continent.
