Dharmendra, the legendary Bollywood actor affectionately known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 89. His illustrious career spanned more than six decades, featuring over 250 films that cemented his place as one of the most enduring stars of Indian cinema.
Born Dharam Singh Deol on December 8, 1935, in Punjab, Dharmendra moved to Mumbai in 1958 after winning a celebrity magazine’s talent competition. He made his film debut in 1960 with the melodrama Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and quickly rose to prominence for his striking looks and screen presence.
He became a trailblazer in the industry, notably appearing topless in the 1966 drama Phool Aur Patthar, a moment that remains iconic in Hindi cinema. Over the years, he shared the screen with many leading actresses, including Nutan, Meena Kumari, and Sharmila Tagore. His most celebrated on-screen pairing was with Hema Malini, with whom he starred in hits like Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) and Sholay (1975). Their partnership extended off-screen, culminating in marriage in 1980, and they had two daughters together.
While Dharmendra earned fame as a matinee idol and action star—earning the nickname “He-Man” in the 1980s—he was also admired for his versatility. Critics and fans alike praised his performances in films such as Bandini, Anupama, and Satyakam, which showcased his nuanced acting and are now considered classics.
Beyond acting, he ventured into film production, supporting projects starring his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol. He also briefly served as a member of parliament, though his passion remained cinema. He continued performing well into his eighties, appearing in the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise (2011–2018) and 2023’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, proving his enduring appeal.
Away from the limelight, Dharmendra cherished a quiet life on his farm, sharing moments with his social media followers and indulging in simple pleasures. Despite his fame, he remained humble, reflecting on his career with gratitude and warmth.
Dharmendra’s legacy as an action hero, versatile actor, and beloved public figure leaves an indelible mark on Bollywood and the hearts of audiences worldwide.
