President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his planned trips to South Africa and Angola, directing Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at both events, senior State House officials confirmed on Friday.
According to officials familiar with the development, Shettima is already en route to South Africa to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit on the President’s behalf. After the summit, he is expected to proceed to Angola for the AU–EU Summit.
“It is a recent arrangement. They just concluded it this afternoon,” a top official disclosed. Another source explained that the President considered it necessary to remain in the country given the current national security situation.
The decision comes amid a string of security incidents across the country, including the abduction of schoolgirls in Maga, Kebbi State; the attack on a church in Eruku, Kwara State; and the abduction of students and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Minna, Niger State.
Sources said the President will remain in Abuja to receive continuous situation reports from service chiefs and coordinate ongoing rescue and security operations.
Tinubu had earlier directed security agencies to intensify search-and-rescue missions and strengthen preventive deployments in vulnerable communities.
