Terrorists have attacked St. Mary’s School, a Catholic educational institution in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, abducting an unspecified number of students and staff.
The incident occurred on Friday, plunging the quiet community into fear and uncertainty. School officials are still compiling the list of those taken, as initial reports indicate that both students and employees were among the victims.
A member of the church community confirmed the attack but said full details would be released after an official statement is issued. He noted that the management is working to verify the exact number of abducted individuals and to notify affected families.
Attempts to reach local security authorities have so far been unsuccessful. Calls placed to the Niger State Police Command and its spokesperson went unanswered as of the time of reporting, leaving parents and residents desperate for information.
The abduction comes just days after a similar attack on a government school in Kebbi State, where dozens of students were also taken by armed men. The repeated targeting of educational institutions has heightened concerns about the safety of schools in the northern region, where armed groups continue to operate with alarming frequency.
Residents of Papiri community say the latest attack has created widespread panic, with many fearing further raids. Community leaders are urging government authorities to deploy additional security forces to protect vulnerable schools and speed up rescue efforts.
The Niger State Government is expected to address the incident once a full account of the situation is established. Families of the victims are anxiously awaiting updates as security agencies begin preliminary investigations.
As kidnappings continue to rise across the region, calls are growing louder for stronger security interventions and improved protection for students, teachers, and rural communities who remain at the mercy of armed groups.
