Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has called for the urgent deployment of additional security operatives to the Ekiti Local Government Area, particularly the troubled Eruku axis, following renewed attacks in the community.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor condemned the latest violence and urged immediate reinforcement to support existing security structures in the area.
“The Governor has sought immediate deployment of more security operatives to support the existing security architecture in the area. He requested that this new measure be activated without delay,” the statement said.
AbdulRazaq described the attack as “unconscionable,” expressing sympathy to residents of Eruku and surrounding communities, especially families of victims at the Christ Apostolic Church where gunmen struck on Tuesday evening.
According to local reports, armed men stormed the church during a service, firing sporadically and killing several worshippers. The pastor and an unspecified number of congregants were abducted and taken into the bush. An earlier ambush the same evening along the Ilorin–Kabba Road also forced travellers to flee into nearby forests.
The exact number of abducted victims remains unclear as security agencies and local hunters continue search operations.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that operatives and vigilantes responded swiftly to gunfire on the outskirts of Eruku. Two casualties were recorded, while a vigilante sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported widespread panic as the attackers moved through the community, with some residents fleeing into bushes for safety.
Community leaders said Eruku had suffered repeated assaults in recent weeks, appealing to both state and federal authorities for decisive intervention to prevent further loss of lives.
Governor AbdulRazaq assured residents that the government would continue to support security agencies in efforts to protect lives and property across the state. He also commended the recent deployment of additional troops to Kwara as part of broader efforts to stabilise the region.
