Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has inaugurated the newly reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs, with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II appointed as chairman, while the Emirs of Gaya, Karaye and Rano will serve as members.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The inauguration comes shortly after Governor Yusuf assented to the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, which legally dissolved the five emirates created during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, Governor Yusuf said the restructuring of the traditional leadership framework was aimed at enhancing its effectiveness in promoting peace, stability and socio-economic development across the state.

He described the traditional institution as a vital pillar of history and a custodian of values, heritage and social cohesion.

“The inauguration of the Council of Emirs today is the reaffirmation of our administration’s commitment to preserve Kano’s cultural legacy, strengthen good governance, and deepen the partnership between the Government and the Emirates,” Yusuf said.

He added that the council is expected to serve as a unified platform for traditional rulers to deliberate and offer informed counsel on matters affecting the well-being of citizens.

Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo expressed optimism that the new Council will significantly contribute to the overall development and stability of the state.

Earlier, the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Professor Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, delivered a historical overview of the Kano Emirate system and its ties with the Rano, Gaya and Karaye domains. He noted that the latest reforms restore a centuries-old hierarchical structure in which the Emir of Kano serves as the head of a unified emirate.

In his remarks, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II hailed the reconstitution of the Council as timely and rooted in historical tradition. He commended Governor Yusuf for what he described as monumental achievements and pledged the full commitment of the emirates to supporting the progress and development of Kano State.
