Nnamdi Kanu Drops Plan to Call Witnesses in Ongoing Terrorism Trial

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday, abandoned his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu, who is standing trial on seven counts of terrorism charges filed by the Federal Government, informed the court that after reviewing his case file, he concluded there was no valid charge against him, hence his decision not to open his defence.

At the last hearing on Friday, the IPOB leader had sought an adjournment, explaining that his former legal team, led by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), had not released his case file to him.

He had earlier indicated his readiness to defend himself and applied for witness summons to enable him to call witnesses. However, during Monday’s proceedings, Kanu said he believed the prosecution had failed to establish any case, making further defence unnecessary.

In response, the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, directed Kanu to file a written address formally stating his position and serve the prosecution accordingly.

Justice Omotosho also advised him to consult criminal law experts to understand the potential legal implications of his decision.

The court adjourned the matter to November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses, depending on whether Kanu maintains his stance or opts to proceed with his defence.
