Hon. Steve Oruruo has officially assumed office as the new acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, with a firm pledge to rebuild, reposition, and reenergise the party following recent high-profile defections, including that of Governor Peter Mbah.
Speaking during a briefing at the party’s secretariat in Enugu, Oruruo assured members and supporters that the PDP remains strong, united, and resilient despite the current political turbulence.
“The intent of this gathering is to assure the people of Enugu, and indeed Nigeria, that the PDP is still very much alive in Enugu State,” Oruruo said. “We are ready to rebuild the party in the face of the current defections of Governor Peter Mbah and other elected officials.”
He said his leadership would focus on reawakening the party’s grassroots strength by mobilising loyal members, ensuring internal democracy, and restoring confidence among supporters.
Oruruo promised to conduct credible primaries and conventions that would produce trustworthy candidates capable of winning public support, stressing that the PDP was entering a “new phase of renewal and renaissance.”
“Even in the face of persons leaving the party, it does not amount to the capitulation of the PDP,” he added. “If credible candidates emerge from our ranks, the public will rally behind them.”
Acknowledging the financial implications of losing top members, Oruruo maintained that the will of the people—not financial influence—will drive the party’s strength.
He also assured that under his leadership, the Enugu PDP would uphold fairness, equity, and transparency, while maintaining its independence as a people-oriented political movement.
“We are building a PDP that is highly independent. We want to create a party that will win elections and truly represent the people,” he stated.
Calling for stronger inclusion of the Southeast in the PDP’s national structure, Oruruo urged the party leadership to ensure the region’s full participation in decision-making processes.
“The Southeast must be encapsulated fully in everything that the PDP is doing at the national level. Going forward, our region must be part of every political calculation,” he said.
A former Commissioner for Information, Oruruo vowed to lead with transparency, sincerity, and justice, promising to strengthen the PDP into a cohesive political force capable of reclaiming its dominance in Enugu politics.
He concluded by reaffirming that the party remains “in pole position to accommodate the yearnings of our people,” as it embarks on a fresh journey of revival and political resurgence in the state.
