The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike. This was announced by the union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Prof. Piwuna, the decision followed an overnight meeting of the union’s National Executive Council, which ended in the early hours of Wednesday. He stated that the strike was initially declared in response to the federal government’s failure to address several long-standing issues affecting university staff and the state of public universities.
He noted that while the government has resumed negotiations and made some commitments, key issues are still unresolved. However, the union acknowledged the efforts of students, parents, and members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in pushing for dialogue and encouraging a resolution.
As a gesture of goodwill and in recognition of these interventions, the union resolved to suspend the strike. Prof. Piwuna emphasized that although the suspension marks a step forward, the union will continue to closely monitor the government’s actions and expects concrete progress on all outstanding matters.
