Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has inaugurated the North-West University Teaching Hospital, describing the facility as a monumental achievement and a lasting legacy for the people of the state.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Sokoto, the governor praised the vision behind the establishment of the teaching hospital, which was initiated by former governor and senator, Aliyu Wamakko. He said the project marks a major milestone in medical education, healthcare delivery, and human capacity development across the North-West region.

“This hospital will serve as a centre of excellence for clinical care, medical education, and research. It is equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities designed to meet the health needs of both Sokoto residents and the wider region,” Aliyu stated.

The governor urged the hospital’s management and staff to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and compassion in their service to humanity, emphasizing that the institution must live up to its mission of providing world-class healthcare and training.

Aliyu also outlined recent reforms in the state’s health sector, including the approval of an internship programme for Radiography graduates by the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria. With this development, Sokoto-sponsored Radiography graduates will complete their mandatory one-year internship at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto.

He further highlighted other achievements such as the automatic employment of 122 Sokoto-trained doctors, the deployment of 1,675 nurses and midwives to healthcare facilities across the state, and the introduction of a two-year compulsory rural posting for government-sponsored medical professionals.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to health and human capital development, the governor noted that healthcare remains one of the key priorities under his 9-point Smart Innovative Agenda, which secured the sector the second-largest budget allocation for 2025.

“I assure the people of Sokoto State of our unwavering dedication to providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services for all, regardless of location,” he said.

In his remarks, the founder of North-West University, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, described the hospital as a symbol of progress and a new chapter for medical research, training, and service delivery in the region. He explained that the facility was established to support the university’s newly approved programmes in Medicine, Nursing, Radiography, and other allied health sciences.

“Our goal is to bring world-class healthcare closer to our people while offering a centre for research to address the specific health challenges of our region,” Wamakko stated, commending Governor Aliyu for his visionary leadership and outstanding performance within a short period in office.

Vice-Chancellor of North-West University, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, also expressed pride in the institution’s rapid growth, noting that within three years, the university had secured a full operational licence from the National Universities Commission and approval to establish a College of Health Sciences.

He said the teaching hospital would provide students and staff with practical exposure, advanced research opportunities, and experience in managing complex medical cases. Bunza also praised Governor Aliyu for his unwavering support, describing him as the “architect of a new and progressive Sokoto.”

Speaking on behalf of the hospital’s management, Lawal Bello of the Chief Medical Advisory Committee assured that the staff were committed to upholding excellence, professionalism, and ethical standards in all areas of healthcare delivery.

The event drew dignitaries from government, traditional institutions, and the health and education sectors, marking a historic moment in Sokoto’s journey toward improved healthcare and educational advancement.
