More than 3,400 people have died in road accidents across Nigeria between January and September 2025, while over 22,000 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. This was disclosed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which also recorded a total of 6,858 road crashes nationwide during the same period.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja to launch the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, attributed the alarming figures to factors such as driver fatigue, overloading, illegal conveyance of passengers in haulage vehicles, and the dangerous practice of transporting fuel in plastic containers.

He noted that driver behaviour remains a critical determinant of road safety, stressing the need for greater responsibility, especially during the festive period when accident rates typically rise.

This year’s campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” aims to address the spike in crashes commonly recorded between December 15 and January 15.

According to Mohammed, the FRSC is ramping up its public engagement to promote safer driving habits. He said the Corps is implementing proactive strategies to reduce crashes and fatalities, including expanded enforcement, public awareness efforts, and collaboration with transport stakeholders.

He also highlighted the Corps’ renewed focus on driver education through partnerships with accredited driving schools and fleet operators. Enforcement of traffic laws has been reinforced through mobile courts and checkpoints, particularly targeting violations like overloading and excessive speeding.

Mohammed further announced the revival of the FRSC Annual Lecture Series, a platform designed to drive national conversations on road safety as a public health issue. He revealed that preparations are ongoing for an International Conference on Road Crash Victims in Africa, scheduled for November 16 to 18, 2025. The conference is expected to enhance post-crash care and improve response systems in line with global safety standards.

He called on all Nigerians to support the Corps’ efforts in making roads safer and officially declared the 2025 Ember Months Campaign open.
