Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, has indefinitely suspended its Students’ Union Government (SUG) following incidents of misconduct during the 2025 Students’ Week celebration.

The suspension follows the emergence of photos and videos from the event’s controversial “Gender Swap Day,” which drew strong backlash from the university community and the public. The university described the activities as a clear violation of its values, dress code, and moral standards.

In a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, the incident was described as “regrettable and disappointing,” with the behavior of some students deemed inconsistent with the institution’s core principles.

An emergency meeting of the university’s management reviewed the situation and attributed the disorderly conduct during the event to poor supervision and coordination by the current SUG leadership.

As part of its response, the university has dissolved the SUG indefinitely, initiating plans to restructure student leadership and implement a new framework focused on accountability, discipline, and inclusiveness.

Students found to have participated in acts that tarnished the university’s image are to face disciplinary action, while those involved in criminal behavior have been arrested and will be handed over to the authorities for investigation.

In the aftermath, the SUG leadership issued a formal apology to the university, acknowledging the failure to uphold expected standards and pledging improved conduct in the future.

The university reiterated its commitment to maintaining academic excellence and moral discipline, emphasizing that similar behavior will not be tolerated in future student events.
