The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The confirmation took place on Thursday during a plenary session in the Senate Chamber, following a thorough screening by lawmakers sitting as a Committee of the Whole.
During the exercise, senators posed several questions to the nominee, which he responded to satisfactorily. After the session, Professor Amupitan was allowed to take a bow and leave the chamber, with lawmakers promising to communicate their final decision to him.
Following his departure, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to restore all privileges on the Senate floor, which had been suspended earlier in the session. The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader and approved through a voice vote.
Announcing the outcome, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared the confirmation of Professor Amupitan as the new INEC Chairman.
“The nomination of Joash Ojo Amupitan for appointment as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission is hereby confirmed,” Akpabio announced.
Professor Amupitan succeeds the outgoing INEC leadership and is expected to oversee upcoming electoral reforms and preparations for future elections in Nigeria.
