President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the Nigeria Police Training Institutions (Establishment) Bill, 2024, providing formal legal backing for 48 police training institutions across the country.
The new Act aims to institutionalise police education, promote continuous professional development, and align Nigeria’s law enforcement standards with global best practices. It classifies police training facilities into five main categories: Police Colleges, Police Training Schools, Police Tactical Schools, Police Technical Training Schools, and other specialised institutions, distributed strategically across the six geopolitical zones.
Key institutions now officially recognised by law include the Police Colleges in Ikeja (Lagos), Kaduna, Maiduguri (Borno), and Oji River (Enugu), as well as the Police Staff College in Jos (Plateau) and the Police Detective College in Enugu.
The law also recognises multiple Police Training Schools in locations such as Bauchi, Minna, Sokoto, Benin, Calabar, Ilorin, Ibadan, Jos, Owerri, and several others, aimed at strengthening capacity building throughout the police force.
Additionally, the Act establishes elite Police Tactical Schools including Mobile Training Schools in Gwoza (Borno), Ila-Orangun (Osun), and Ende-Hill (Nasarawa); Counter Terrorism Unit Schools in Nonwa-Tai (Rivers) and Gombe; the Special Protection Unit School in Kafin Hausa (Jigawa); and specialised centres such as the K9 Training School in Bukuru-Jos, Mounted Troop Training School in Jos, Marine Training School in Toru-Orua (Bayelsa), and the Police Pre-Retirement Training School in Kudan (Kaduna).
