As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary on Wednesday, governors across the federation, lawmakers, activists, and clerics reflected on the nation’s journey since 1960, urging citizens to remain united, resilient, and willing to make sacrifices for true nationhood.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s democratic resilience and modest gains, the leaders stressed the need for collective resolve to tackle insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship.

Governors preach hope, sacrifice

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, in a message on his verified Facebook page, said Nigerians must draw inspiration from the struggles of the founding fathers.

“Today, Nigeria marks 65 years of independence; a significant milestone in the journey of a nation that has weathered many storms, yet continues to stand tall, proud, and unbroken. This anniversary is both a celebration and a call to reflection… a moment to honour the sacrifices and vision of our founding fathers,” he wrote.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, called for prayers and repentance as part of national rebirth.

“We have no other country like Nigeria; therefore, it is our duty to do everything possible to protect and project its image. Seeking divine intervention is critical to the restoration of peace,” he said.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, urged Nigerians to be patient with current reforms.

“The sacrifices may be huge today, but there is no doubt that the end will vindicate the decisions if we stay the course,” he said.

In Edo, Governor Monday Okpebholo described independence as a reminder of the sacrifices of Nigeria’s heroes, pledging to continue expanding infrastructure and youth opportunities.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, stressed the need for unity across ethnic and religious divides.

“Nigerians must keep hope alive to achieve the best for the country,” he said.

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, warned that peace would remain elusive without joint efforts against banditry.

“Governments at all levels, traditional rulers, religious leaders, as well as community leaders must work together if we are to end the activities of bandits,” he said.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described the anniversary as “a historic milestone” and emphasized collective responsibility.

“Building a stronger Nigeria is not the sole responsibility of the government; it is a collective duty of every Nigerian at home and abroad,” he noted.

In Ondo, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa praised President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, saying:

“Permit me to acknowledge that our country is blessed at a time like this to have a visionary leader like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Right now, indications are that Nigeria is certainly making progress and on the path of glory.”

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, emphasized respect for the rule of law.

“We must in totality ensure compliance with the rule of law, not rule of the thumb,” he warned.

Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, described independence as a call to reflection and sacrifice, lauding Tinubu’s “necessary medicine for an economy long distorted and pampered over.”

In Abia, Governor Alex Otti urged Nigerians to rise above tribalism, insecurity, and corruption.

“We are a people of destiny… The best of our years is in the future, not in the glory of the past nor the frustrations of the present,” he declared.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, stressed unity.

“As we mark 65 years of independence, let’s renew our faith in one another and in a future built on peace, unity, and justice,” he said.
