Nigeria at 65: Muslim group decries widespread violence, insecurity in Northern region

As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has called on the country’s leaders and citizens to face Nigeria’s growing security and governance problems with “conscience and courage.”

In a statement titled “Nigeria at 65: A Call to Conscience and Courage,” MPAC expressed deep concern over the increasing violence and insecurity affecting many parts of the country. The group highlighted the ongoing attacks by bandits and insurgents in states such as Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Plateau, Borno, and most recently, Kwara.

The organisation reminded Nigerians that true independence is more than just celebrating with flags and anthems. According to the statement, real independence means building a country where justice, peace, and dignity are guaranteed for everyone, not just a few.

Quoting the Qur’an (Chapter 4, Verse 135), MPAC stressed the importance of justice, warning that when a country loses its sense of justice, it also loses its moral direction. The group said Nigerians should be free from fear, hunger, and lawlessness — and these should be the new markers of independence.

“This is not a time for empty words,” the statement read. “Leaders must stop making excuses and take urgent action. Justice must not be delayed, security must not be politicised, and compassion must be shown to all, not just a few.”

The statement was signed by MPAC’s Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor. He encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope but to continue promoting unity, kindness, and shared responsibility. He also reminded those in power that leadership is a trust and that they will one day answer to God for every innocent life lost.

MPAC ended the message with prayers for peace and healing in the nation and called on all Nigerians to renew their commitment to justice, fairness, and respect for one another — the same values the country’s founders had in mind at independence.
