President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with $100,000 each, a plot of land each, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship victory.
The announcement was made at a special reception at the State House in Abuja on Monday evening. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President praised the team’s consistency, discipline, and patriotism after their 78–64 victory over Mali in Sunday’s final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical crew also received $50,000 each, a plot of land, and the OON national award in recognition of their leadership and contribution to the team’s success. Wakama made history as the first female coach to lead a team to an AfroBasket title.
President Tinubu hailed the team as national heroes and commended their role in elevating Nigeria’s global sports profile. He noted that the rewards reflect the government’s commitment to recognizing excellence and inspiring future success.
This honour comes just a week after the President similarly rewarded the Super Falcons for winning Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to uplifting Nigerian athletes, particularly women in sports.
