A fresh wave of defections hit the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) today as four senators and three members of the House of Representatives formally announced their move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, read their separate letters from the Senators where they cited irreconcilable differences in the opposition PDP as reason for their cross-carpeting.
With this latest shift, the APC now commands 72 seats in the 10th Senate, up from the 50 seats it held at the commencement of the current Assembly in June 2023.
In the House of Representatives, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the defection of three lawmakers from Osun and Edo states.
The lawmakers who announced their defection during plenary are Taofeek Ajilesoro (Ife Central/Ife East/Ife North), Emmanuel Olusanya (Atakunmosa West/Atakunmosa East/Ilesha East), both from Osun State, and Marcus Onobun (Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben) from Edo State.
Apart from leadership crisis, the defectors also highlighted the need to align forces with President Bola Tinubu to deliver the dividends of democracy to their respective constituents.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas officially welcomed the lawmakers into the APC, with several APC members offering congratulatory handshakes and expressing support for their legislative efforts.
