Team Nigeria athletes Miracle Ezechukwu, Rosemary Nwankwo, and Mariam Jegede dominated the U18 women’s 100m final, winning the first, second and third position respectively at the ongoing the 3rd combined Confederation of African (CAA) Junior Athletics Championships in Abeokuta.
The trio became a cynosure of eyes yesterday as they powered out of the blocks, leaving behind other contestants to sweep the gold, silver, and bronze, eliciting cheers from their supporters.
Ezechukwu claimed victory in the much-anticipated final with a time of 11.88 seconds (-0.4 wind reading), followed closely by Nwankwo at 11.96s and Jegede at 12.20s.
In the near same fashion, Nigeria won the first and second position in the U-20 women event, thanks to Nweke Cynthia and Oyibu Success, who ended their races at 11.65s and 11.78s
Just behind them was Côte d’Ivoire’s Lou Yonan Chantal, who clinched bronze at 11.87s after narrowly beating Nigeria’s Nwankwo Lucy, who came fourth with 11.98s
Conversely, Team Nigeria won bronze in both the men U-18 and U-20 events, respectively, as the former was won by Igbigbidje Clifford at 10.89s and the latter by John Caleb at10.61s
South Africa duo of Manavhela Mukona and Fourie won the gold and silver medals in the U-18 100m after finishing at 10.61secs and 10.76secs, respectively.
