Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Tuesday, warned Nigerians to be prepared and resilient in the face of climate variability and extreme weather events.
At a one-day sensitization forum held in Abuja on Tuesday, NiMet brought together journalists and civil society organizations to highlight the importance of accurate weather forecasting and early warnings in protecting lives and livelihoods.
The forum aimed to strengthen collaboration between the agency, the media, and civil society, while also equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively share vital weather information with the public.
Director-General, NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, in his opening address at the event, encouraged participants to work actively towards a common goal of having a “better informed, better prepared and more resilient” populace in the face of climatic changes and extreme weather conditions
Anosike also spoke about recent improvements within the agency, such as enhanced staff training and welfare, which he said were part of broader efforts to improve service delivery.
He said, “The forum marked an important step in enhancing collaboration between NiMet and key stakeholders, ultimately contributing to the agency’s mission of providing best-quality services to the nation.”
Also speaking at the event, Professor Vincent Weli, Director of Weather Forecasting Services, pointed out that weather and climate affect everyday life.
He emphasized that the media plays a critical role in keeping the public informed and safe.
