The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially acknowledged that errors occurred during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), impacting candidates’ performance.

The Registrar of the Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, diclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

The UTME serves as a crucial requirement for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. It assesses candidates in four subjects one of which is the mandatory Use of English, while the remaining three are specific to each candidate’s intended course of study.

According to JAMB, out of 1,955,069 UTME results processed in 2025, only 12,414 candidates (0.63%) scored 300 and above, with just 4,756 (0.24%) reaching 320 or higher. Meanwhile, 983,187 candidates (50.29%) scored between 160 and 199—commonly regarded as the minimum benchmark for admission into many Nigerian tertiary institutions.
