The Vatican   has said the body of Pope Francis will be taken to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m. (0700 GMT).

In a statement on Tuesday, the Vatican said the pontiff’s body is currently laid out in a coffin in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his 12-year papacy.

According to the Vatican, the cleric spent five weeks in hospital earlier this year for double pneumonia, stating that he fell into a coma after suffering a stroke and ultimately experienced “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.’’

Meanwhile, Cardinals will meet on Tuesday to plan his funeral, which leaders from around the world will attend ahead of a conclave next month to elect a new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican on Monday disclosed that the pope died of a stroke at the age of 88 years after suffering from Pneumonia and stroke.
