The Federal Government has said yesterday that there was no end to frequent national grid collapses in the country.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja when he appeared before the Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe-led Senate Committee on Power to defend the 2025 budget, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the national electricity grid remains vulnerable to frequent collapses, partly because the government is yet to repair a major transmission line in the Northern region due to persisting insecurity.
He said grid collapses will continue but noted that the government will ensure that it reduces the frequency of collapses and ensures a very short turnaround time to restore the grid, stressing that vandalisation remains one of the biggest challenges in the power sector.
The minister also revealed plans to invest N36 billion in the distribution of transformers across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
According to him, this investment is aimed at improving power distribution infrastructure and addressing systemic challenges in the sector.
He disclosed further that the Federal Government is set to commence Phase 1 of a major revamp of five sub-stations across the country, highlighting that over seven million customers are still subjected to estimated billing.
He said failure to fix the Shiroro-Kaduna-Mando line has placed undue pressure on the grid, resulting in frequent collapses.
The minister also disputed the widely quoted figure that the country’s national grid collapsed 12 times in 2024, noting that the grid collapsed only eight times
