A Federal High Court judge in Abuja has dismissed a fresh request by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for bail and a change in custody.

Justice Binta Nyako rejected the request today, citing previous rulings against Kanu on the same issues.

Kanu who is currently being held by the Department of State Services (DSS), had sought bail reinstatement after a prior bail was revoked due to his absence from court proceedings. He also requested transfer from DSS custody to house arrest or prison.

Justice Nyako stated that Kanu previously jumped bail and fled the country, and his sureties were discharged due to their inability to locate him. She asserted that Kanu’s only legal recourse is an appeal to a higher court.

Kanu has reportedly expressed refusal to stand trial in any Nigerian court, claiming such action would violate Nigerian and international law.
